In 2013, there were approximately 14.5 million undergraduate students in the United States, and according to StatisticBrain, 61.7% of college students in the country are enrolled full-time. One result of the millions of students who flock to college campuses around the country every year is the need for affordable student housing. Student housing programs and services are on the rise. Students not only go to school, they tend to prefer living off-campus and will jump on the opportunity to do so. Census data from 2012 showed that more than 50,000 students lived in off-campus housing.

Apartments for students aren’t necessarily hard to come by but there are a few things to keep in mind when looking for one that is right for you. Here are a few things to keep in mind when looking for apartments for college students:

    • Make sure before you sign a lease exactly what you are responsible for, including damages, utilities, furniture, and other factors.
    • Do a thorough tour around the apartment to check for potential problems or damages. Check for mold, utilities, and any furnishings that may have come with it. Taking pictures and notes will definitely be helpful in avoiding liability. Do all of this before signing a lease.
    • If you are planning on living with a roommate, be sure to introduce yourself. Send him or her an introductory email. Tell them who you are and ask them about who they are. Having the right roommate or roommates makes a ton of difference when going to school, believe it or not.
